Are you wondering how you will store all your kitchen equipment, groceries, utensils, cleaners and crockery in your apartment kitchen? I agree that with our kind of cooking, it’s a challenging task, but by no means impossible! A small kitchen should not deter you from whipping up your family’s favorite dishes.
Storage is the biggest problem. You can get creative:
-
- Fix a few hooks on the walls and hang strainers, napkins, ladles, spatulas and the like.
- Use stackable shelves to store stuff compactly – you can use them inside cabinets, as well as on the very top or under each cabinet. Under the shelf racks can be used to keep bowls and smaller utensils.
- Fix a file holder on the door of a cabinet and store your foils and wraps in that.
- Mount your dish drainer on the wall to have more space on your kitchen counter.
- Install a tension rod under the sink to hang your big spray bottles – like Colin, Mr. Muscle, and other cleaners.
- Turn an old wooden cupboard into a pantry to store dry groceries like tea, coffee, rice, pulses and so on.
- Install a magnetic strip on the wall for your knives – keep your kitchen counter free.
- Fix holders on the inside of your cabinet doors for your cutlery, spice bottles and serving spoons etc.
- Install a kitchen island with an overhead rack with hooks to store saucepans, frying pans and more, which are not too heavy.
- Make use of corners for storage by installing pull-out corner storage racks in your flat in Calicut.
- Arrange your ingredients, equipment, and utensils properly: ingredients closer to the cooking area, crockery closer to the sink area, and so on.
- Mount a cutting board in a drawer that slides out over your dustbin so that all the peels and scraps can be thrown right into it. You can save space as well as time.
- You can also remove shelves and install drawers instead; this will not only give you more storage space, you will find it much easier to organize everything.
- Fix a horizontal cup holder on the wall to save countertop space.
- Install shelves on free walls to store your in-use grocery tins
- Install a pull-out organizer to store canned food and bottles (ketchup and so on) in narrow spaces.
- You can consider having the sink in the corner – space which would have otherwise remained unused.
- Build a shelf behind your stove – in the backsplash area to hold items like oil, ghee and so on.
